Why Choose an Independent Facilitator for Person-Centered Planning?

What is an Independent Facilitator?

An Independent Facilitator (IF) is a trained professional who assists individuals in the person-centered planning process, prior to the development of their Individual Plan of Service (IPOS). An Independent Facilitator helps individuals understand their options, ensures all voices are heard, and guides the planning process using the principles of choice, dignity, inclusion, and self-determination.

An Independent Facilitator follows a neutral, unbiased, and person-focused approach; and has no financial interest in the outcome of the plan.

Why is This Important Today?

With increasing funding pressures, staffing shortages, managed care requirements, and compliance demands, planning meetings can become focused on available services, budgets, and system limitations rather than on the person’s vision for their life.

An Independent Facilitator helps ensure that the plan truly reflects the individual’s goals, preferences, and rights. They help keep the person-centered planning process anchored in the core principles of choice, control, and self-determination.

How Can an Independent Facilitator Help?

  • Keeps the Person’s Voice at the Center of all planning and decision making
  • Encourages creative, individualized solutions rather than service-driven planning.
  • Identifies and documents unmet needs, even when resources are limited. Helps identify what the person needs and wants even when funding is limited.
  • Promotes accountability by helping document action steps, responsibilities, and follow up plans.

Remember…

Person-centered planning was never intended to be a process where people fit into services. It was intended to be a process where services and support are organized around the person’s life.

To provide support to individuals with a disability using Self-Determination to tailor their life according to their personal vision.

I want every person to have multiple options when the person center plan is being developed. I find value in a team approach. When conversations take place and people feel supported, we can come up with our best plan. My experience in this field will help to provide quality ideas and connections. I am a strong advocate.

My hope is to not only assist in giving the participant a voice when it comes to making their plan, but to also puzzle together ideas and goals that are substantial and meaningful so by the next year, we can celebrate the wins! I cannot wait to work together and get moving on making a plan centered around you!
